A LITTLE GIRL SO FULL OF LIFE TO THOSE WHO KNEW HER.
BUT FOR THE MANY WHO DIDN'T GET TO KNOW MADDIE CLIFTON ... PICTURES LIKE THESE GAVE THEM A GLIMPSE OF HER SPIRIT.
"I was up there when the parents were up there talking to the television and I had tears coming to my eyes... I have uh 11 grandkids and I can imagine how they feel."
SO MANY WHO COULD ONLY "IMAGINE" HOW MADDIE CLIFTON'S FAMILY FELT ONCE THEY DISCOVERED HER MISSING... CAME OUT FOR THE SEARCH TO SHOW THEY CARE....
"I feel the parents' that they have in their heart ... I lost my son two years ago.."
Marva Heiney, volunteer (from November 6, 1998): "Right now I'm just going on the sheer fact that I need to be here... and I'm gonna be here until... as long as it takes... I'll be back tomorrow."
TOMORROW TURNED INTO NEXT YEAR ... FOR MARVA HEINEY..
THIS DEVOTED VOLUNTEER COORDINATED A YELLOW RIBBON CAMPAIGN DURING THE SEARCH FOR MADDIE CLIFTON.
AND NOW... SEVEN MONTHS LATER... SHE'S STILL MAKING RIBBONS... ONLY NOW THEY'RE PURPLE.
"Maddie's favorite color."
"We did the yellow ribbons just to begin with... and everyone was wearing those.. and then just to sort of go into the purple ribbons.. made it even better.... a closure and something that was just for Maddie."
"what was it about this little girl that mobilized people like yourself.. who never knew Maddie Clifton ... but have done so much in her name?"
"I guess another reason it really touched me...was I've seen Steve and Sheila's tears... felt their pain... there's nothing you can do to take the pain away."
BUT HEINEY IS DOING SOMETHING... TO HELP OTHERS EXTEND THEIR SUPPORT TO THE CLIFTON FAMILY.
"This is from a 10-year old little boy... 'God has a new angel.'"
SHE'S GATHERING CONDOLENCES... MEANINGFUL MESSAGES TO HELP THE CLIFTONS AND THE COMMUNITY... HEAL.
"She is our little angel of Jacksonville... it's just amazing how she brought this town together."
So many children were touched by the tragedy... now they can come here... to help heal.
It's called Maddie's Place... it's a playground built in her name.
"Maddie was their playmate.. Maddie was their, their friend... they feel that loss.. and they need a connection... and I think this'll help."
